Monetizing financial instruments is the process of converting financial assets into cash or other liquid assets to gain immediate funding or liquidity, which is achieved without selling the underlying assets. In most instances, ownership of the financial instrument is transferred to the monetizer for a specific period (usually one year and one day), and the asset is delivered to the monetizer's bank account via Euroclear, or the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC), or SWIFT MT760 and SWIFT MT799, depending on the custodial entity and the type of financial instrument. While temporarily holding ownership of the asset, the monetizer utilizes it as collateral to access a credit line from the financial institution receiving the asset.

The monetizer and the client typically enter into a joint venture agreement to invest the funds from the credit line in one or more Private Placement Programs (PPPs) and share the proceeds from the investment.† In some cases, clients may seek only to monetize their assets and use the funds received from the monetizer for purposes unrelated to entering a PPP.
